Playboy Philippines: My First Impressions

Playboy

I finally got a copy of Playboy Philippines. How is it selling? Well, at the place where I purchased my copy, their initial batch of 40 copies arrived at about 6 pm. By 7 pm, they had already sold 5 copies. I should probably check back tomorrow evening to see how many copies they have sold.

Now, to those who read Playboy "for the articles," they do have an impressive lineup of writers. They are not your juvenile, geeky, techno-obsessive, club-going, pseudo-intellectual wannabes. Their credentials are indeed impressive. They are full-time writers. Their college and post-graduate courses are about literature. They teach literature. They have been awarded for their literary work. So far I have read through two articles---Butch Dalisay's take on mature women in "In Praise of An Older Woman" and Angelo Lacuesta's erotic tale of a creative director and his model in "Thirty-Second Story." Both are honest pieces. Both are written by people who know their craft. The first is an intelligent look on elder women through a man's maturing eye. The second definitely is far from the smutty and fabricated tales one sees in the less-highbrow magazines.

I have one disappointment though. It's in their interview portion. For a magazine that is trying to capture the more discerning gentleman, the magazine editors have not interviewed a Filipino and instead chose Matthew Mcconaughey, a actor known for such classic, ground-breaking, award-winning, box-office hits such as "Sahara" and "How to Lose a Guy in 10 days." Methinks that the local distributors of his new movie "Fool's Gold" (which has garnered an impressive 10% rating according to Rotten Tomatoes) had some influence. At least they tried to make it up by giving the 20-questions section to Chiz Escudero.

Now I know a lot of readers are wondering about the degree of nudity in the magazine. The Playmates of the Month, models Weng Santos and Joy Pagurayan, show lots of flesh sans nippes and pubes. Why they used two models for the initial launch (they could have used one model for their second issue) is unknown to me. What is also befuddling is that the editors also chose to print both girls back-to-back on the same pinup page. In my younger days, I would carefully pry out the staple wire so that I could tack the picture on a wall (hence the term "pinup"). With the initial Philippine version, I can't show both babes and I have to choose which babe to display (although if I have to choose, Weng Santos takes my vote hands-down).

But those who would be satisfied by simply seeing a couple of nipple shots will not be disappointed. The gallery of past Pinay playmates and the pictorial of WWF's Maria Kannelis do show a couple of teats and areolae. So yes, editor Beting Laygo Dolor made good his statement by showing at least one nipple, but, as expected, there is no pussy in that bunny magazine.

The first issue really, really disappointed me. I already read foreign copies of Playboy. Ours is very very conservative for Playboy's standards. I hope Heff sees this copy, he himself may also be disappointed...I just hate our country's too conservative nature....

It couldn't have sucked any further. Lame photos and very long, boring articles... I just hope that the second won't be as bad as the first one...

Just got my 1st issue last week...what can say, the playmates were a dissapointment..it's seems they were posing for a fashion magazine...did not entice me at all.  Although the articles and other features where ok, I''l still choose FHM any time of day.

Hopefully next time they'll be more edgier or more contreversial or probably they'll end up like PUMP.

i grew up reading my dad's cracked, torn and musty Playboy magazines secretly in our house's silong back when i was a kid. having Playboy come to our shores is certainly a welcome treat.

its sad though that the local version wont live up to the quality of nude photography that set Playboy apart from the other magazines like Hustler or Penthouse back then, or from FHM, Stuff and MAXIM now. the local version of Playboy could have at least tried to make efforts like what good 'ol Heff did back when Playboy was starting out back in the states. they could at least show the woman's breasts plainly.

since we live in a very conservative country... i still wouldnt dare walk around in public holding a Hustler or Penthouse magazine, lest be hounded by stares from people thinking i'm a pervert. but if it were a Playboy i was holding, i would even openly show people that i am a man with a taste for the artful, appreciative, respectful depiction of the beautiful female body.

there's a fine line between art and pornography when it comes to depicting the nude human form... be it male or female. i learned that while growing up and its just that our society is just too sensitive when it comes to topics about the birds and the bees. FHM was the pioneer in making sex a little bit more mainstream although they too still have to brazenly show pictures worthy of being in Playboy. i think Playboy should break the mold and live up to the name, and lifestyle that their magazine stands for.

FHM beats the shit out of this. wth.

I finally got the chance to see the 1st edition of Pinoy Playboy, what can I say? I was terribly disappointed! you've got girls that are not naked, a few shots of butt here and there but no frontal! Damn, waste of money! The 2 girls in the "centerfold", sisters yata sila did not even arouse me!

Article wise, they are pretty much covered in every men's magazine in circulation today. I wont be surprised if they fold, leave and apologioze to ole Heff! hope they could turn around things and make Playboy, PLAYBOY!!! damn the pressure from the different groups! hello, minors cant buy them!!!!

Playboy is not Playboy without full frontal nudity! What then makes them different from FHM, Maxim, etc?

nice insights b-man! btw, how much did it cost? and can is it on display just like any other men's magazine? i remember way back in high school that we had to go 'under the table' to purchase playboy US since it wasn't on display stands back then.

Cost is P199.  And yes it is displayed along side the other men's magazines like FHM, Maxim, etc

from the comments and your post, parang i'm not so keen to buy this mag.

nothing much to see, after all.

For me Playboy Philippines is weird. Why have Playboy and not show frontal nudity? Isnt that one of Playboy's trademark items? As for the pussy shots, I dont think it will ever happen as Playboy is not known for that. Penthouse Philippines anyone?

Penthouse Philippines is a good idea! The Guccione's will make a killing over here! I just hope they feature the kind of girls that we find good looking and not the "type" that the Caucassians appreciate!

Hopefully, the lack of pussy can be remedied in the future. It's not the same without it.

I do hope that in the future they'd get over the pressure imposed by the church and other groups.  Playboy is not Playboy without the nudity! Playboy, the magazine itself does not interest me. Their latest playmates all have boob jobs and you dont get to see much of their pussies! Kinda lame for my taste.

The people behind the magazine (well, Playboy US-kung pwede pati rin dito) can show pussy without being obscene! think MET-ART!!!

Maybe they should have just named it "Playkid" or "Playbaby" instead, since it is so mild version of the original. I just can't understand what is the big fuzz about this magazine?

Damn, so it's already out. I grew up with this mag, gotta go and get one.

Your 1st impression sounds "hopeful" at least...
