Historic? More like idiotic

In a move that they have described as "historic," a group of pastors have filed a complaint against large publishing companies like Summit and ABS-CBN for allegedly indecent products.

From Inquirer:

Named respondents were editors in chief Allan Madrilejos for FHM, Pierre Inaki Calasanz for Maxim, Ramon Faustino for Playboy, Zak Zorro Zamora for Playhouse, Editha Asumbrado for Sagad, Joe Dalde for Toro, and the Hataw editor; and their managing editors, and general and circulation managers.

They were charged with violation of articles 200 and 201 of the Revised Penal Code and Manila City Ordinance No. 7780 on antipornography.

They have complained that such magazines showed “obscene and erotic pictures/poses that show, depict or describe nude or semi-nude bodies, sexual acts, sexual intercourse, private parts, with no educational or artistic value, but intended to draw lust and arouse prurient interest.”

Hmmm...no educational or artistic value? To some extent I would agree with them that some of the magazines above has almost zero intellectual value, but can I not say the same about the pastors' most precious book as well? I can also claim that the Bible has no educational value. The world was created in six days? Adam and Eve just suddenly appeared from nowhere? A massive flood wiped out the entire human race, except for some old dude in an ark? I can also claim that the Bible has no artistic value. And while I am sure that such a statement will be a matter of debate, it further underscores my point---what can be artistic to some can be lurid to others.

Is it wrong to "draw lust and arouse prurient interest?" If it weren't for lust, we would not have any our motivations to "go forth and multiply." I do wonder why religious pundits consider being horny as wrong. I do admit that anything in excess can lead to disastrous situations, but their idiotic logic is similar to banning food because it can lead to obesity.

And Rep. Bienvenido Abante of Manila’s District VI further blames these publications "for the reported increase in sex crimes among the youth." Really? Where are the statistics to back this claim? If there is indeed such an increase in sex crimes, could there be a different cause? And did they stop to consider that repression may also lead to an increase in sex crimes? Heck, without any evidence to back up such a statement, I could also claim that the abolishment of such material can lead to an increase in sex crimes. After all, isn't it similarly logical to say that people will go out and commit sex crimes because they have no other means of release?

Interesting, yes we all are relgious in our ways but at the same time the readings people pay money for also the ladies who pose get paid, so in ways everyone has soemthing to buy food with thats the way I like to think of it.

imho,

i do think comparing Bible with shallow publications is indeed inappropriate, the logic of priests can be conservative but the essence of Bible dated way back 5 thousand years ago, can not be ruled out with some obvious abstract stories,  (though verifiable like possible locations of the garden of Eden check it at wikipedia, Noah's ark and great flood stories do have historical sites, and most of the old testament’s events do have solid historical claims even from records of other cultures like the Indians and Chinese and Egyptians).   for my part ,i didn't finished the bible from cover to cover, but i did read most part of new testament and initial books from the old testament, and i think that the master publisher of Bible never really wanted it to be like an art book but a life guide book with a historical reference for us to know the purpose and direction of our being.. and it kinda surprised me that the author of this topic didn't realize that.  Since when do we refer to FHM to get a life direction/purpose?  and on the part of education, i do know the owner of this blog is highly educated and should know that the basic teachings from Jesus written in the new testament significantly contributed to the educational system of this world and obviously in most of the exclusive private schools here. I wonder if there are any publisher uses Maxims's articles as a solid reference that can stand the test of time for over 2,000 years. And speaking of life changing, reading Bible do get people into better, more fulfilling life. i do see lots of people mostly Christians declared their commitment for a God serving life, although for me its still something that is really hard to accomplish but i do see the results of their efforts made them productive, joyful and loving. Sharply at the opposite side, the adult magazines, do any of these promote good family values? Real joy without "hardcore sex"? and true love with opposite sex not just the love for fuck?

i do frequent read the blogs here for fun, seldom do i post any, but after reading  this particular blog, i just can't help but react..  lets do our lustful adventures if really needed but just don't get on something like criticizing God's book with our shallow logics… after all we are just humans, and God only reveals things that we need to know, not what we want to know....

Here's a thought: The Philippines is not a conservative country anymore. They made a formal study on that topic and guess what, we only think we are conservative due to our elderly population and the existence of the church. One only needs to look at all the advertisments, magazines and the like to realize that.

Conservative countries are countries like the Saudi Arabia etc. Does the Philippines even seem anything like that? Look at our birthrates for crying out loud.

Yet, everyone needs something to blame. This 'historic' move by the church is them pointing fingers at the cause of the loss of our conservatism. Apparently, 'God' doesn't answer their prayers that ask why our country is going like this. They didn't have to point fingers though: I'll tell you what caused all of this Christianity is bullshit. Religion shouldn't be there to order us around and tell us how to live. Their only Job should be for spiritual purposes.

Stating that the Bible has no educational nor artistic value makes you no different from the people filing the complaint.  I doubt you truly believe that the Bible has no educational nor artistic value.  Just because you don't agree with what's inside it doesn't mean there's nothing to be learned from it.  It goes both ways.

Lust is different from wanting to go forth and multiply.  Just like gluttony is different from hunger.  And not all the religious say being horny is wrong...it's what you do with the urge that matters.  Lol, and they're not saying to ban sex.  lol, I think these publications would be like a food magazine featuring greasy and fatty foods and telling people to eat more than they need and not to share...but still try to eat healthy.

One can't blame these publications for the increase in sex crimes among the youth and I don't agree with the complaint either, but I believe it's wrong to call it idiotic.  And instead of attacking their beliefs and the Bible, why not try to prove why these publications should not go?

Well said....

And to prove why these publications should not go?  My simple argument is: Freedom of Speech.  I go by the adage that if you don't want it, then don't buy it.

And this, I feel, is the better strategy: let the clergymen rally their followers to simply NOT BUY THE MAGAZINE.

yeah, that is a better strategy
